Quantification of Estrogen Receptor-Alpha Expression in Human Breast Carcinomas With a Miniaturized, Low-Cost Digital Microscope: A Comparison with a High-End Whole Slide-Scanner

Abstract: IntroductionA significant barrier to medical diagnostics in low-resource environments is the lack of medical care and equipment. Here we present a low-cost, cloud-connected digital microscope for applications at the point-of-care. We evaluate the performance of the device in the digital assessment of estrogen receptor-alpha (ER) expression in breast cancer samples. Studies suggest computer-assisted analysis of tumor samples digitized with whole slide-scanners may be comparable to manual scoring, here we study … Show more

“…First, the authors used a portable digital microscope that costs “approximately that of a midrange smartphone” to capture images of a quality comparable to using a × 10 objective lens on a traditional microscope. [ 2 ] Many studies have investigated the utility of rugged, portable digital microscopes, but this system was different from most in that it has motorized movement capability, which works to capture numerous representative fields from a single slide. Second, the authors trained a commercially available cloud-based image analysis software, WebMicroscope ( https://webmicroscope.com/imageanalysis/ ), to perform a two-step analysis pipeline.…”

“…To provide better affordability and wider usage of linear stages, a 3-D printing method can be used. The advantages of 3-D printing include but are not limited to reducing the complexity of product manufacturing, shortening production time and improving efficiency, reducing product manufacturing processes, and allowing immediate production [13][14][15]. These points make possible the production of laboratory XYZ translation linear stages by 3-D printing, as well as reducing the unit cost per stage.…”
