A tracer test to examine in situ denitrification in shallow groundwater by a piezometer with a packer system used bromide as a tracer of dilution and acetylene (10%) to block the denitrification process at the nitrous oxide stage. During the test, dissolved oxygen, nitrate (NO 3 -), bromide (Br-), nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were measured. To calibrate the experimental method, comparison with numerical simulations of the groundwater transfer were carried out, taking into account the environmental characteristics. The method was tested by measurements undertaken in different environmental conditions (geology, land use and hydrology) in two riparian wetlands. Denitrification rates measured by this method ranged from 5.7 10 -6 g N-NO 3 -L -1 h -1 to 1.97 10The method is applicable in shallow aquifers with a permeability from 10 -2 to 10 -4 m s -1 .

Groundwater/surface-water interaction is receiving increasing focus in Africa due to its importance to ecologic systems and sustainability. In South Africa's 1998 National Water Act (NWA), water-use licenses, including groundwater, are granted only after defining the Reserve, the amount of water needed to supply basic human needs and preserve some ecological integrity. Accurate quantification of groundwater contributions to ecosystems for successful implementation of the NWA proves challenging; many of South Africa's aquifers are in heterogeneous and anisotropic fractured-rock settings. This paper reviews the current conceptualizations and investigative approaches regarding groundwater/surface-water interactions in the context of South African policies. Some selected pitfall experiences are emphasized. The most common approach in South Africa is estimation of average annual fluxes at the scale of fourth-order catchments (~500 km 2 ) with base flow separation techniques and then subtracting the groundwater discharge rate from the recharge rate. This approach might be a good start, but it ignores spatial and temporal variability, potentially missing local impacts associated with production-well placement. As South Africa's NWA has already been emulated in many countries including Zambia, Zimbabwe and Kenya, the successes and failures of the South African experience dealing with the groundwater/surface-water interaction will be analyzed to guide future policy directions.

Research sites to study the influence of drainage on soil and water chemistry, litter decomposition and soil respiration in central Amazonia. ISSN = 1980ISSN = -993X -doi:10.4136/1980 ABSTRACTThe launching of this first issue of the sixth volume contains 12 inedited peer reviewed papers from 53 authors that originated from three continents, four different countries, 20 universities from which 16 are from several Brazilian federal universities, 3 from abroad, 1 Brazilian state and one municipal university. Other nine authors are from research institutions, among them three from abroad. We proudly state that this fifteenth edition has been published on time as it was the case of all previous issues. Most articles of this issue concentrate on environmental characterization of different ecosystems pollution control and mitigation. Two articles assessed the water quality of small river basins. Then there are two articles, one about fire occurrence and precipitation relationship and one about irrigation control to optimize water usage. This editorial points out new accomplishments and changes on publication policies.Keywords: Ambi-Agua; environment; water resources; publication. Nove outros autores são de instituições de pesquisa, entre elas, três do exterior. Temos orgulho em afirmar que esta décima quinta edição foi publicada no dia previsto, sem atraso, como foi o caso de todas as edições anteriores. A maioria dos artigos desta edição se concentra na caracterização ambiental, controle e mitigação de poluição de diferentes ecossistemas. Dois artigos avaliaram a qualidade da água de pequenas bacias hidrográficas. Ainda há dois artigos, sendo um sobre ocorrência de incêndio relacionado com precipitação e outro apresenta equipamento para o controle de irrigação, visando otimizar o uso da água.
