Quantifying the residual volume transport through a multiple-inlet system in response to wind forcing: The case of the western Dutch Wadden Sea

Abstract: In multiple‐inlet coastal systems like the western Dutch Wadden Sea, the tides (and their interaction with the bathymetry), the fresh water discharge, and the wind drive a residual flow through the system. In the current paper, we study the effect of the wind on the residual volume transport through the inlets and the system as a whole on both the short (one tidal period) and long (seasonal or yearly) time scales. The results are based on realistic three‐dimensional baroclinic numerical simulations for the yea… Show more

“…This sensitivity to wind direction has a regional variability, as is suggested by the model result in Fig. 11 and supported on shorter timescales by the modeling study by Duran-Matute et al (2016). Even on a small scale like the Dutch Wadden Sea, there is a spatial variability in the response of the annual mean sea level to changes in the wind climate.…”

“…Accordingly, the setup at watersheds is generally higher at the western side than at the eastern side. More evidence of the role of the wind in the spatial variability comes from the study by Duran-Matute et al (2016), where on tidal timescales a qualitatively similar spatial response was seen for (south)westerly winds.…”

“…Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 123, 8460-8488. https://doi.org/10. 1029 in offshore or open ocean waters (e.g., Flores et al, 2017;Horner-Devine et al, 2015), estuaries are semienclosed (Cameron & Pritchard, 1963;Hansen & Rattray, 1965, 1966 and lagoons can be more limited in exchange with the coastal ocean (Kjerfve, 1986;Kjerfve & Magill, 1989) and may even have multiple openings (Duran-Matute et al, 2016;Herrling & Winter, 2015;Jia & Li, 2012;Li, 2013). The constrictions of such system at entrance can act as low-pass filters that diminish tidal influence into the basin (Fernandes et al, 2004) or change the fortnightly tidal phases (Hill, 1994).…”

“…Recent studies are directing to the importance of wind-driven circulation (e.g., Duran-Matute et al 2016). In the Wadden Sea, winddriven flow is capable of pushing large amounts of water and steer the sediment pathways so they overshoot the channel network and cross the watersheds between the sub-basins (Sassi et al 2015).…”
