Quantifying the risks of hypertension, age, sex and smoking in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm

Abstract: Male sex, smoking and hypertension are strong risk factors for the development of AAA. In this study hypertension did not significantly increase the growth rate of existing aneurysms. Smoking remains the most important avoidable risk factor for AAA. The analyses presented here suggest that selection for screening, other than by age and sex, is not worthwhile.

“…64 It has been shown that the one-fifth of normal aortas expands with age. Other hemodynamic parameters like hypertension which increases the risk of having an aortic aneurysm by 30-40% 58 could also elevate patients' blood flow rates. Another consideration for applying the same inlet velocity for the normal subjects in our study who had smaller aorta diameter stems from the fact that those were female subjects who are expected to have lower flow rates-as compared to the pathological AAA cases that were all male subjects.…”

“…Smoking is the most important environmental risk factor for AAA formation and progression. 14,20,21 Smoking associates with AAA in men 2.5-times more frequently compared with coronary artery disease. 22 …”

“…20,21 This may be due to the relatively small proportion of current smokers in our study. Because hypertension has been documented as a risk factor for AAA in several studies, 11,22,23 it is surprising that hypertension is not a risk factor for expansion of small aneurysms. 8,22 In the case of our study, it may be because the majority of men with hypertension are adequately treated, 11 thereby minimizing the impact of this risk factor.…”
