In the gradual process of evolution, plants have developed natural sun protecting substances that enable continuous survival under direct and intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation. As part of our studies of plant-derived pigments that might constitute an alternative to conventional sunscreens, we have tested the ethanolic extracts of roots, stalks, and inflorescences of populations of wild Cichorium endivia subsp. divaricatum (Asteraceae) in terms of protection against sunburn, and in prevention of UVB-induced pyrimidine dimer formation and IL-6 mRNA expression in the human keratinocyte cell line, HaCaT. Using ELISA technique for detection of pyrimidine dimers and RT-PCR for detection of IL-6, we found that the ethanolic extract of C. endivia roots absorbs radiation in the UVB spectrum and partially prevents induction of pyrimidine dimers and IL-6 expression. Application of the root extract on the skin prior to UVB irradiation totally prevented erythema. Our findings suggest that C. endivia extracts might possess sun-protective qualities that make them useful as sunscreens.

This review article is a comprehensive survey of capillary electrophoresis methods developed for the measurement of short-chain organic acids and inorganic anions in a wide variety of matrices, such as food and beverages, environmental, industry, and other applications, as well as clinical applications in body fluids such as urine, plasma or cerebrospinal fluid. Details of sample pretreatment and of electrophoretic conditions have been collected in tables, arranged by the type of matrix. Strategies employed for method development for the analysis of these compounds by capillary electrophoresis in real samples are discussed.

Quantitative structure-properties relationship (QSPR) has been applied to modeling and predicting the electrophoretic mobilities of a series of benzoic acid derivatives in different carrier electrolyte composition. Descriptors that were selected by stepwise multiple linear regression (MLR) technique are radial distribution function-lag8 (RDF-8), unweighted R-maximal autocorrelation geometry, topology and atomic weight assembly-lag4 (R-GETAWAY-4), geometrical descriptor lag-26 (GEO-26), and the overall dielectric constant of the carrier electrolyte. These descriptors were used as inputs for generated 4-7-1 artificial neural network (ANN). The results obtained using ANN and MLR were compared as well as with the experimental values and showed the superiority of ANN over MLR model. Also the appearance of these descriptors in QSPR models reveals the role of electronic and steric interactions in solutes mobility in capillary electrophoresis due to the dielectric and hydrodynamic friction forces.
