To assess the depth of alveolar bone loss by using Conventional radiography (IOPA) and Digital radiography (RVG) technique in periodontitis as it affects the connective tissue attachment and supporting bone around the teeth. Methods: The study was carried out on 40 males and 10 females aged between 20-65 years who have generalized mild to severe chronic periodontitis. A series of conventional bitewing radiographs and digital bitewing radiographs (15,16,17,25,26,27,35,36,37,45,46,47) were taken for each patient. The Statistical software namely SPSS version 16.0 was used for data analysis. Paired t-test was performed on all the variables to evaluate between both the groups at p ≤ 0.05. Results: The overall results showed the mean statistical difference between both the conventional and digital bitewing radiographs as 0.4595. It was observed that overall digital bitewing radiographs averaged about 0.4mm greater bone loss than conventional bitewing radiographs. Conclusion: It was concluded that digital radiographs showed better results when compared to conventional radiographs in terms of alveolar bone loss as RVG has superior image recording capabilities.

Objective:The objective of the present study was to evaluate the regenerative power of sticky bone in guided tissue regeneration alone compared to sticky bone with different biomodulation techniques in terms of bone density at the regenerated site.Materials and methods: 40 rats were randomly assigned into 5 groups (8 rats each), the control group (CG), the sticky bone group (SB), the sticky bone with LASER (SB-L), the sticky bone with PRF membrane, (SB-P), and sticky bone with LASER and PRF (SB-L-P). A rectangle shaped bone defect (3ml height and 4 mml length) was created in the diastema between the incisors and molar area with preservation of the lingual plate of bone at the mandible of all rats. The defects were filled according to the assigned test groups. 60 days after surgery the rats were radiographically examined to obtain the bone density measurements. Results:The measurement of bone density in the defect has shown that the SB-L group and SB group had the highest mean (172.5± 15), (169.9± 14.9) respectively. The difference between the two groups were not statistically significant. However, both groups were statistically significant when compared to all three groups, CG, SB-P group and SB-L-P group. All three groups had the lowest mean (72.5±4.7), (74.1±8.4), (88.2±14.5). There were no statistically significant differences between these three groups. Conclusions:The sticky bone augmented with LASER biomodulation has demonstrated higher bone density compared to sticky bone alone as graft material. However, the addition of PRF, or LASER and PRF has shown to be non-significant.

Detecting demineralization of enamel and cementum after gamma irradiation using radiographic densitometry

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of radiographic densitometry in detecting the early demineralization of human enamel and cementum in irradiated and non-irradiated teeth. Sixty extracted teeth were divided into two groups: irradiated group and non-irradiated group. After irradiation, the groups were subjected to demineralization-remineralization (PH) cycling. Radiographic densitometric measurements (gray values) of a selected area of interest in the enamel and in the cementum of each tooth were performed at baseline and after PH cycling. After PH cycling, there was a significant reduction in gray values for both groups. The difference between "baseline" and "after PH cycling" values represents the reduction in the mineral content of the hard tissue, i.e., the demineralization. Results show that the demineralization of irradiated tooth enamel and cementum was significantly higher compared to that of non-irradiated tissues as determined by gray-level values. It is concluded that densitometric measurements by means of digital radiographs allow for the detection of demineralization of enamel and cementum, and can be used successfully for diagnosis of the early carious lesions in patients who received head and neck radiotherapy. This will allow implementation of remineralizing therapy and avoid the risk of progression of radiation caries. Furthermore, it is concluded that gamma irradiation with typical therapeutic doses for head and neck carcinoma is a direct cause of demineralization of tooth enamel and cementum.

Abstract: CADIA analysis is a reliable and sensitive tool for detecting subtle bone density variations. More reliable results are obtained with increased exposure time; however, excessive exposure should be avoided.
