Journal of Advanced AbstractThis paper investigates the compressive strength development of blast furnace slag (BFS) blended mortar mixtures incorporating various mineral admixtures, namely BFS, limestone powder (LSP), and gypsum (CS). BFS replacement ratios of 15, 20, and 25 wt.%; LSP replacement ratios of 2, 3, 4, and 5 wt.%; and a CS replacement ratio of 2 wt.% are employed to improve the strength of BFS blended mortar mixtures. The hydration reaction and products resulting from the use of cement, BFS, and mineral admixtures are quantitatively examined with respect to the XRD/Rietveld method in order to investigate the relationship between the produced hydrates and the strength. Experimental investigation reveals that the mortar mixture with BFS 15 wt.%, LSP 4 wt.%, and CS 2 wt.% exhibits similar compressive strength to an ordinary Portland cement mortar mixture. In addition, the strength is found to be decreased as the BFS replacement ratio increases. At a BFS replacement ratio above 20 wt.%, LSP affects the strength improvement of BFS cement and CS affects the initial strength improvement of BFS cement.

This study was conducted to investigate the expansion characteristics of mortar specimens during water immersion test, considering "Ettringite (Ett)-generating origin" in cement paste specimens. Specifically, the expansion characteristics of mortar specimens were estimated, suggesting Ett production for each constituent mineral estimated by XRD-Rietveld and selected dissolution methods as an indicator. Results shows that the expansion characteristics of mortar specimens could require not only simple Ett production change evaluation before and after water immersion, but also the evaluation, considering the generation cite of Ettringite and coexisting materials such as C-S-H around Ettringite.

Microstructural and Compressive Strength Analysis for Cement Mortar with Industrial Waste Materials

Cement production uses large quantities of natural resources and contributes to the release of CO2. In order to treat the environmental effects related to cement manufacturing, there is a need to improve alternative binders to make concrete. Accordingly, extensive study is ongoing into the utilization of cement replacements, using many waste materials and industrial. This paper introduces the results of experimental investigations upon the mortar study with the partial cement replacement. Fly ash, silica fume and glass powder were used as a partial replacement, and cement was replaced by 0%, 1%, 1.5%, 3% and 5% of each replacement by the weight. Compressive strength test was conducted upon specimens at the age of 7 and 28 days. Microstructural characteristic of the modified mortar was done through the scanning electron microscope (SEM) vision, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was carried out for mixes with different replacements. The tests results were compared with the control mix. The results manifested that all replacements present the development of strength; this improvement was less in the early ages and raised at the higher ages in comparison with the control specimens. Microstructural analysis showed the formation of hydration compounds in mortar paste for each replacement. This study concluded that the strength significantly improved by adding 5% of silica fume compared with fly ash and glass powder.
