Quantitative detection of schistosomal circulating anodic antigen by a magnetic bead antigen capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (MBAC-EIA) before and after mass chemotherapy

Abstract: The magnetic bead antigen capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (MBAC-EIA) has been applied to detect schistosomal circulating anodic antigen (CAA) in pre- and post-treatment sera from 55 individuals in a Schistosoma mansoni control project in the Blue Nile valley of western Ethiopia. The amounts of CAA detected by this assay were positively correlated with the numbers of eggs per gram of faeces (epg). A significant reduction in CAA levels as measured by the MBAC-EIA was observed after mass chemotherapy. T… Show more

“…Immunomagnetic beads have been used preferentially in in vitro diagnosis because they can provide results rapidly and require simple methods. [17][18][19] Our previous study showed that SEA-MEIA is a new tool for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis. 13 In this study, we evaluated SEA-MEIA as a diagnostic method for schistosomiasis japonicum in persons with low-intensity infection.…”

“…Several ELISA methods for the detection and quantification of antigen have been developed using microtiter plates and synthetic beads [33][34][35][36][37][38][39]. Various types of synthetic, micron-to submicron-size immunobeads have been developed.…”

“…Both traditional ELISA and the magnetic bead enzyme immunoassay correlated well with the presence of Schistosoma eggs in stool. However, the ELISA took 6 h to perform compared with only 1 to 2 h for the magnetic bead enzyme immunoassay, which was used to monitor the effects of mass treatment of patients infected with S. mansoni (20).…”
