Quantitative interocular comparison of total corneal surface area and corneal diameter in patients with highly asymmetric keratoconus

Abstract: Keratoconus is a progressive corneal disorder which is frequently asymmetric. The aetiology of keratoconus remains unclear, and the concept of keratoconus as an ectatic disorder has been challenged recently. We carried out a retrospective study in 160 eyes of 80 patients, to evaluate and compare interocular differences in corneal diameter and surface area in patients with unilateral or highly asymmetric keratoconus (UHAKC). Calculations were performed using raw topographic elevation data derived from topograph… Show more

“… 42 , 43 , 44 At these dimensions, the surface area of samples within the container, 1.77 cm 2 , is similar to that of the human ocular surface, of 1.3 cm 2 to 2 cm 2 . 45 , 46 Sample weight was recorded to 5 decimal places once every 10 minutes over a period of 100 minutes. PBS was used as a surrogate for actual tears, given the R evap of human tears is the same as that of PBS alone 43 and the length of time that would have been required to collect the volume of tears needed prohibited using human tears in the current study.…”

“…La relevancia de la topografía corneal en el diagnóstico y seguimiento del queratocono es incuestionable. Esta técnica, que permite una evaluación detallada de la morfología corneal, es fundamental para la detección precoz y el manejo adecuado del queratocono (1). En el contexto ecuatoriano, donde los recursos y tecnologías médicas pueden estar limitados, estudios como el presente son de vital importancia para optimizar el uso de las herramientas diagnósticas disponibles.…”
