Quantitative mapping of scientific research—The case of electrical conducting polymer nanocomposite

Abstract: This study aims to understand knowledge structure both quantitatively and visually by integrating keyword analysis and social network analysis of scientific papers. The methodology proposed in this study is capable of creating a three-dimensional "Research focus parallelship network" and a "Keyword Co-occurrence Network", together with a two-dimensional knowledge map. The network and knowledge map can be depicted differently by choosing different information for the network actor, i.e. country, institute, pape… Show more

“…VOS (Visualization Of Similarities) was first developed in the Netherlands in 2006. It has been progressively advanced by research and widely used by researchers in the field of biblimetrics (Van Eck & Waltman, 2010;Waaijer, van Bochove, & van Eck 2010;Waltman, van Eck, & Noyons 2010;Heersmink et al, 2011;Lee, 2011;Leydesdorff & Rafols, 2011;Lu & Wolfram, 2010;Su & Lee, 2010;Tijssen, 2010).…”

“…Several research studies have been conducted by researchers in the area of scientific mapping and network analysis of different fields. For instance, Lee and Su (2011) analyzed 223 highly cited articles from 142 institutions in 269 countries, in the area of electrical conducting polymer nanocomposites, with the aim of presenting a quantitative map of scientific research. In an article entitled “Mapping knowledge domains of Chinese digital library research output, 1994–2010,” Zhao and Zhang (2011) attempted to find the intellectual paradigms in the field of digital libraries.…”

“…Until these potential discoveries have been exploited, there is little practical need of going to indirectly related literatures to search for yet more potential discovery. In the practical situation, even the potential innovation as defined above has not been exploited, and accelerating these potential innovations should be the first order of business [55][56][57][58][59].…”
