Abstract: We conclude that the immune control of EBV infection is similar in MS and controls, and that reactivation of EBV may correlate with MS disease activity.

“…Furthermore, we do not detect EBV DNA either in the plasma or PBMC of MS patients or control subjects. This result, which contrasts with that of other investigators (10,13), could be due to methodological differences. Furthermore, because we tested one time point, which was not always the same as the cellular assay time point, we may have missed a transient increase in EBV viral load.…”

“…However, whether an increased EBV viral load is present in MS patients remains controversial (10,13). There also may be an intrinsic dysregulation of EBV-specific CD8 + T cells in MS patients (14).…”

“…(iii) EBV viral load in serum or peripheral blood cells is only modestly increased in MS (Wagner et al 2004;Buljevac et al 2005;Lindsey et al 2009) (although children with MS shed EBV in saliva more frequently than healthy controls) (Yea et al 2013). (iv) Monoclonal antibodies (natalizumab) that block α4 integrin and thus prevent T-cell migration into the central nervous system (CNS) provide a very effective treatment against MS relapses (Polman et al 2006).…”

“…While the viral load is extremely high in SLE, in MS it is similar to that seen in the healthy population [67]. This suggests that chronic reactivation of the EBV infection, as well as a detectable immune response to early EBV antigens occurs only in SLE, but not in MS. 3.…”
