Quantitative trait loci affecting clinical mastitis and somatic cell count in dairy cattle

Abstract: Norway has a field recording system for dairy cattle that includes recording of all veterinary treatments on an individual animal basis from 1978 onwards. Application of these data in a genome search for quantitative trait loci (QTL) verified genome-wise significant QTL affecting clinical mastitis on Chromosome (Chr) 6. Additional putative QTL for clinical mastitis were localized to Chrs. 3, 4, 14, and 27. The comprehensive field recording system includes information on somatic cell count as well. This trait i… Show more

“…Lactoferrin may be active in modulation and regulation of macrophages, lymphocytes and neutrophil function (Smith and Oliver, 1981;Sordillo et al, 1997). Due to its properties, lactoferrin is one of the more important factors that prevent and control mastitis in dairy cows Seyfert et al, 1996;Hirvonen et al, 1999;Klungland at al., 2001;Teng, 2002). Furthermore, SCC generally increases with advancing age and stage of lactation.…”

“…Therefore, the use of genetic markers to indicate resistance or susceptibility to mastitis or to better exploit the phenotypic information through genomic selection (GS) is an attractive proposition (Goddard and Hayes, 2007). At present, however, the available literature on GS and molecular markers for mastitis resistance mainly refer to dairy cattle (Klungland et al, 2001;Boichard et al, 2003;Schulman et al, 2004). In sheep, quantitative trait loci (QTL) influencing SCS have recently been detected (Rupp et al, 2003b;Gutierrez-Gil et al, 2007;Raadsma et al, 2009).…”

“…All three bovine selectin genes (SELP, SELL and SELE, also known as CD62P, L and E) are located near each other on BTA 16 in a putative mastitis-related quantitative trait locus (QTL) (Klungland et al, 2001;Sorensen et al, 2008;Sodeland et al, 2011). This observation potentially supports their importance in combatting bovine mastitis.…”
