Quantitative trait locus mapping of fitness-related traits in Drosophila melanogaster

Abstract: We examined the genetic architecture of four fitness-related traits (reproductive success, ovariole number, body size and early fecundity) in a panel of 98 Oregon-R x 2b3 recombinant inbred lines (RILs). Highly significant genetic variation was observed in this population for female, but not male, reproductive success. The cross-sex genetic correlation for reproductive success was 0.20, which is not significantly different from zero. There was significant genetic variation segregating in this cross for ovariol… Show more

“…Further study of the genetic architecture of ovariole number in Drosophila spp. has revealed genotype-by-environment interaction (Starmer et al 1998;Bergland et al 2008) and several loci of large effect that interact epistatically (Wayne et al 2001;Richard et al 2005;Orgogozo et al 2006).…”

“…This analysis is similar to factorial ANOVA, commonly used in Drosophila genetics to study sex-dependent effects of loci (22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29)(30). In our case, sex and strain were two discrete covariates.…”

“…7). We used approaches developed in Drosophila complex trait genetics, where multiple sex-specific QTL have been described (22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29)(30), to look for a sex-specific effect of the Idd loci in the current study. A sex-by-strain interaction effect of T1D incidence was only statistically significant when NOD and NOD.NOR-Idd4 mice were compared ( p ϭ 0.0194), supporting the idea of sex-specific behavior of alleles at the Idd4 locus.…”

“…The first QTL on 3L overlaps with QTLs for ovariole number (Wayne et al, 2001) and sternoplural bristles (Gurganus et al, 1998). The last QTL overlaps with QTLs for male life span (Nuzhdin et al, 1997) and abdominal bristles (Gurganus et al, 1998).…”

“…The use of RI lines derived from parental strains that are not significantly different for the trait in question, has been quite successful in D. melanogaster. The same RI lines used here have been used in QTL studies of life history and morphological traits, which typically show limited interspecific variation, including longevity (Nuzhdin et al, 1997;Vieira et al, 2000), bristle number (Gurganus et al, 1998), reproductive success Wayne et al, 2001), sex combs (Nuzhdin and Reiwitch, 2000) and ovariole number (Wayne et al, 2001). We ask if the RI lines vary significantly in mean IPI and analyse the genetic basis of this variation.…”
