The high increase of bandwidth-intensive applications like high definition video streaming in home and small office environments leads to QoS challenges in hybrid wired/wireless local area networks. These networks are often not QoS aware and may contain bottlenecks in their topology. In addition, they often have a hybrid nature due to the used access technology consisting of, for example, Ethernet, wireless, and PowerLAN links. In this paper, we present the research work on a novel autonomous system for hybrid QoS in local area networks, called QoSiLAN, which does not rely on network infrastructure support but on host cooperation and works independently of the access technology. We present a new QoS Signalling Protocol, policing and admission control algorithms, and a new lightweight statistical bandwidth prediction algorithm for autonomous resource management in LANs. This new QoS framework enables link based, access-medium independent bandwidth management without network support. We provide evaluation results for the novel bandwidth prediction algorithm as well as for the QoSiLAN framework and its protocol, which highlight the features, robustness, and the effectiveness of the proposed system.

International audienceThe home network is an open, heterogeneous and distributed environment where ensuring multimedia ap-plications' quality of service is a main concern. Mechanisms to reserve resources (CPU, memory, network) and architectures using them already exist. However, they require to modify the devices or the applications and they do not take into account the heterogeneity of the home network. This paper presents a non-intrusive and adaptable resource management framework. This framework is developed upon an architecture, customized for the actual devices. This architecture uses global components that delegate to local components the management of local resources. These components rely on the resource reservation mechanisms provided by the Linux operating system in order to guarantee the resources to the applications. The framework has been implemented on real devices (PCs, laptops and embedded multimedia devices), bridged with wireless and Ethernet networks. The evaluations of the framework show that reservations are guaranteed even if noise is generated on the resources, which also guaranties the expected quality of service

As our society becomes more and more digital, the corresponding demand for electric energy is increasing. Despite the power efficient design of devices, this rising trend of energy consumption does not weaken because of more and more devices used in our daily life. Collaboration strategies between devices can reduce their overall electrical consumption. Consolidation -i.e., migrating tasks among devices to place into low power state or to switch off a maximum of unused devices -is a mean of optimizing the consumption of a group of devices. So far, consolidation is mainly used in datacenters. Here, we propose a model to extend this approach to Digital Home. This model takes into account properties, such as the unforeseeable appearance of devices or restrictions due to task nature. Its implementation in a Digital Home environment saves around 25% of the energy consumption in a scenario based on the daily life of a family of four persons.
