Quantized Anomalous Hall Effect in Two-Dimensional Ferromagnets: Quantum Hall Effect in Metals

Abstract: We study the effect of disorder on the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in two-dimensional ferromagnets. The topological nature of AHE leads to the integer quantum Hall effect from a metal, i.e., the quantization of σxy induced by the localization except for the few extended states carrying Chern number. Extensive numerical study on a model reveals that Pruisken's two-parameter scaling theory holds even when the system has no gap with the overlapping multibands and without the uniform magnetic field. Therefore the … Show more

“…When gapless Dirac cones are gapped by magnetization, quantized Hall conductance is possible to arise even at a zero magnetic field and without Landau levels. This phenomenon is known as the QAH effect [34][35][36][37][38] , which was recently observed in Cr or V doped (Bi,Sb) 2 Te 3 films experimentally with the quantized Hall conductance 39,40). Multiple Dirac cones systems allow for the realization of the QAH effect with a larger Chern number, which was first proposed in graphene systems 41 , as well as other systems, including magnetically doped (Bi,Sb) 2 Te 3 films 42 and SnTe systems 43 .…”

“…One is the quantized anomalous Hall effect theoretically predicted to occur in two-dimensional metallic ferromagnets, provided that the Hall conductance is larger than h e 2 2 while the diagonal conductance is small on this scale. 98 Oxide interface electrons are promising candidates to realize these conditions with careful design of the carrier density and mobility, and the band structure hosting the strong SOI. The other example is the quantum spin Hall system/topological insulator, which is characterized by the nontrivial topological structure of the Bloch wavefunctions in momentum space.…”

“…This state is theoretically predicted in a number of models, following the original proposal of Haldane with bond currents on a honeycomb lattice (Haldane 1988). These models include, localization of band electrons (Onoda and Nagaosa 2003), a two-band model of a 2D magnetic insulator (Qi, Wu, and Zhang 2006), and magnetically doped topological (crystalline) insulator thin films (Yu et al 2010;Fang, Gilbert, and Bernevig 2014;Wang et al 2013b) or even trivial thin films. (Doung et al 2015) IIIC.…”
