Quench Performance and Field Quality of the LHC Preseries Superconducting Dipoles

Abstract: Abstract-The preseries production of the LHC main superconducting dipoles is presently being tested at CERN. The foremost features of these magnets are: twin structure, six block two layer coils wound from 15.1 mm wide graded NbTi cables, 56 mm aperture, polyimide insulation and stainless steel collars. This paper reviews the main test results of magnets tested to day in both normal and superfluid helium. The results of the training performance, magnet protection, electrical integrity and the field quality are… Show more

“…The production of the 1232 arc dipole magnets is near completion and the cold testing of these important elements will be over before the end of the year. They have fulfilled all the requirements [2] and the operation reliability of these magnets is close to being confirmed.…”

“…After several attempts, a coherent and simple common fit for these curves has been found in the form of: (2) where is the reduction in stack height under pressure , is the maximum applied stress during loading and are constant coefficients. The trend that better represents each curve is a power law for the pressure, and the structure of the terms has been chosen according to their necessity of being maximum-stress-dependent.…”

“…The cold measurements are performed in the cryo-magnets at the CERN test stations. The test sequences are described in [13] and are equivalent for all the magnet types. The MB, MQ and the MQY were cold tested in the SM18 test facility using an horizontal cryostat whilst the MQM results presented here originate from measurements performed in a vertical cryostat [14].…”

“…The test facility consists of 12 fully equipped test benches arranged in 6 clusters (see Fig. 1) which can run independently [6]. Each test bench is composed of a Cryogenics Feed Box (CFB) with its control system, a mechanical support structure and instrumentation racks containing the quench detection electronics, the magnet protection system with the quench heater power supplies, interlocks and also two independent data acquisition systems acquiring the data either at a high frequency range of 5 to 50 kHz or at a low frequency range of 1 to 1000 Hz.…”
