Quorum sensing regulation methods and their effects on biofilm in biological waste treatment systems: A review

Abstract: Quorum sensing (QS) plays an important role in microbial aggregation control. Recently, the optimization of biological waste treatment systems by QS regulation gained an increasing attention. The effects of QS regulation on treatment performances and biofilm were frequently investigated. To understand the state of art of QS regulation, this review summarizes the methods of QS enhancement and QS inhibition in biological waste treatment systems. Typical QS enhancement methods include adding exogenous QS molecule… Show more

“…These methods simply help to increase the content of QS signaling molecules in the biofilms and thus help smoothen the overall operation of biological wastewater treatment systems [ 117 ]. There are three ways to enhance QS in WWTs: (i) addition of exogenous QS signaling molecules, (ii) increased synthesis of QS signaling molecules through addition of accelerators, and (iii) QS bacteria cultivation.…”

“…During this intermediate phase, there is faster growth in the evolution of the biofilm of Gram-positive bacteria compared to Gram-negative species. Interspecies communication, now mediated by the quorum-sensing (QS) system, will facilitate biofilm differentiation, influencing bacterial metabolism and leading to extracellular polysaccharide matrix formation (EPS) and community maturation [ 28 , 29 , 31 ].…”

“…The issues of creating easily reproducible artificial consortia based on the use of well-studied cell strains with stable, safe, and efficient functioning, in case of their application in practice for the sustainable development of ecological systems, are of great scientific and practical importance since they are components of the rational use of biological resources and actively developing synthetic biology [ 7 , 8 ]. The rational selection of microbial candidates and the experimental confirmation of the choice are often the drivers of such a process [ 9 , 10 ].…”
