(R,R)-BD-AcAc2 Mitigates Chronic Colitis in Rats: A Promising Multi-Pronged Approach Modulating Inflammasome Activity, Autophagy, and Pyroptosis

Abstract: Ulcerative colitis is a chronic and incurable form of inflammatory bowel disease that can increase the risk of colitis-associated cancer and mortality. Limited treatment options are available for this condition, and the existing ones often come with non-tolerable adverse effects. This study is the first to examine the potential benefits of consuming (R,R)-BD-AcAc2, a type of ketone ester (KE), and intermittent fasting in treating chronic colitis induced by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) in rats. We selected both… Show more

“…Chronic colitis was induced via administration of 2% DSS [in autoclaved drinking water (w/v)] (Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, MO, United States; Mw = ~40,000) for 1 week, followed by 1% DSS for 10 days. Eventually, 2% DSS was administered for another 7 days (Hoffmann et al, 2017;Saber et al, 2023). The body weight of experimental animals was recorded daily and the percentage of body weight loss was calculated with respect to their original body weight recorded on the first day of the experiment.…”
