Racial/ethnic differences in the time-varying association between alcohol expectancies and drinking during the transition from childhood to adolescence

Abstract: Alcohol expectancies are important determinants of adolescent drinking, but this relationship may differ based on race/ethnicity. This study used time-varying effect modeling to examine racial/ ethnic differences in positive and negative alcohol expectancies and their relationship with drinking among White, African American, and Hispanic youth. Youth reported alcohol expectancies and drinking frequency from 5 th -10 th grade. African Americans initially endorsed higher positive alcohol expectancies than Whites… Show more

“…Compared to Latino/Hispanic and Black adolescents, White non-Latino/Hispanic adolescents had higher positive and negative alcohol expectancies. This is consistent with previous literature that found White children to have higher positive alcohol expectancies [ 12 , 13 ], but the current study also demonstrates White adolescents to have higher negative alcohol expectancies relative to other racial groups.…”

“…In addition, previous alcohol sipping is associated with higher positive alcohol expectancies. These results are consistent with previous literature [ 13 , 15 , 19 , 20 ]; however, the associations between sexual minority status and positive and negative alcohol expectancies as well as lack of religiosity with positive alcohol expectancies are novel in their applicability to early adolescence. Stressors due to sexual minority status have previously been predictive of greater alcohol use [ 36 ].…”

“…We included offspring Sex (0 = male , 1 = female ), self‐reported Race/ethnicity (1 = White , 2 = Black, 3 = Other ), and Age as covariates given prior evidence that they are related to adolescent alcohol use and related problems (Banks et al, 2020). Because family socioeconomic status has been associated with alcohol and other externalizing disorders (Hammond et al, 2021; Piotrowska et al, 2015), we also included parental education and income, indexing family socioeconomic status, as covariates in this study.…”
