Radar measurements of moving objects around corners in a realistic scene

Abstract: In urban warfare or for surveillance purposes, having a stand-off radar system with the capability of "seeing" behind corners would be of great importance. The possibility of detecting moving people and objects in the shadow region of a street corner using diffraction and multipath propagation of radar waves has previously been demonstrated in experimental set-ups. Detections of movements in a realistic scene are investigated in this study. The measurements were made using a radar operating at X-band (9.95-10.0… Show more

“…The second type focuses on the target detection by exploiting the multipath reflection and corner diffraction signals [14]- [22]. Assuming that the geometry of the environment is known a priori, the first-and second-order multipath reflection and corner diffraction NLOS signals are exploited to detect the onedimensional (1-D) range of the target with X-band [17], [18] and S-band [19] radars. It is worth mentioning that, for all of these works abovementioned, no positioning of the hidden targets was made.…”

“…For simple scenarios, validation of a 2D ray-tracer has been proved by comparison with measured data [37]. The ray-tracing technique is also used to generate multipath fingerprints for localization methods based on DOA, time difference of arrival or received signal strength [38][39][40]. However, real-time ray-tracing calculation is time-consuming in complex environments because of its high computational complexity.…”

“…First papers on this topic have demonstrated, via experiments its feasibility [1]- [3]. Then, several works [4]- [6], have proposed different methods for target localization based on parameters association.…”
