Radar Sensing for Activity Classification in Elderly People Exploiting Micro-Doppler Signatures Using Machine Learning

Abstract: The health status of an elderly person can be identified by examining the additive effects of aging along with disease linked to it and can lead to ‘unstable incapacity’. This health status is determined by the apparent decline of independence in activities of daily living (ADLs). Detecting ADLs provides possibilities of improving the home life of elderly people as it can be applied to fall detection systems. This paper presents fall detection in elderly people based on radar image classification by examining … Show more

“…These classification techniques are properly selected based on the features of the problem and the objectives of the radar data analysis. The CNN-based classification technique has achieved the accurate classification of human motion using Doppler radar spectrograms [11,12,35,37]. Additionally, the LSTM-based technique has achieved better accuracy for the continuous classification problem [13,37,38].…”

Additionally, the LSTM-based technique has achieved better accuracy for the continuous classification problem [13,37,38]. Although these techniques can achieve relatively accurate classifications, the mechanisms and/or factors of the classifications are generally unclear.…”

“…In recent years, machine-learning-based approaches that use MDR data have been employed to recognize various types of motion [26,27]. In particular, MDR-based fall detection systems have been developed, and their effectiveness has been demonstrated in realistic situations [28][29][30]. However, these systems aim to detect fall events and do not detect fall risk.…”
