Radiation Exposure during Ureterorenoscopy and Laser Lithotripsy: An Analysis of Stone Characteristics

Abstract: Introduction and Objectives: Stone formers often have a chronic exposure to significant quantities of ionising radiation from radiological investigations and interventions. Predicting radiation exposure would allow the clinician to quantify expected cumulative radiation and find strategies to minimise exposure. We evaluated radiation exposure during ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy (URS + LL) for a single stone episode and correlated the results to stone characteristics. Method: Data was collected retrospect… Show more

“…Stone characteristics as risk factors for increased radiation during RIRS and lithotripsy have been examined in the literature, with greater radiation exposure associated with renal stones compared to ureteral stones and stone diameter >10 mm. 31 These findings are not reflected this our study, likely due to a median stone size of less than 10 mm and the exclusion of primary lithotripsy in the study population.…”

“…Stone imaging techniques were reported in 27 of the 34 studies [ 6 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 16 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 40 , 41 ]. The imaging modality was not mentioned or clarified in the remaining nine studies, and the reference was not clarified [ 9 , 15 , 17 , 25 , 27 , 32 , 37 , 38 , 39 ].…”
