Radio emission from cosmic ray air showers: Simulation results and parametrization

Abstract: We have developed a sophisticated model of the radio emission from extensive air showers in the scheme of coherent geosynchrotron radiation, providing a theoretical foundation for the interpretation of experimental data from current and future experiments. Having verified the model through comparison of analytic calculations, Monte Carlo simulations and historical experimental data, we now present the results of extensive simulations performed with our Monte Carlo code. Important results are the absence of sig… Show more

“…Results from the analysis of inclined air showers [17] are consistent with the predicted signal polarisation, but only dedicated dual-polarisation measurements as are currently being prepared with LOPES will answer these questions definitely. What is the absolute strength of the emission, and is it consistent with the values predicted by theory [10]? The LOPES30 calibrated measurements will answer this long-standing question soon.…”

“…Some important questions have yet to be answered: Are the polarisation characteristics of the emission and the detailed angular correlations as expected by theory [10]? Results from the analysis of inclined air showers [17] are consistent with the predicted signal polarisation, but only dedicated dual-polarisation measurements as are currently being prepared with LOPES will answer these questions definitely.…”

“…The most realistic description of the radio emission is obtained when the complete electromagnetic emission is calculated as a whole, e.g., by an end-point formalism [35]. This approach is followed by the Monte Carlo simulation program REAS3 [36], the latest version of REAS [37,38].…”
