“…14 C is produced in the upper atmosphere from cosmic ray spallation and is then rapidly oxidized to 14 CO 2 , distributed throughout the biosphere, and ultimately, over time, incorporated in the organic and carbonate components of soils and sediments. Natural radiocarbon can be used to date PyC from ∼50,000 yr ago to ∼1960 (e.g., Masiello & Druffel 1998, Bird 2013.
