Radiofrequency Ablation for 110 Malignant Liver Tumours: Preliminary Results on Percutaneous and Surgical Approaches

Abstract: RFA is a safe and effective procedure for treating patients with malignant liver tumours. No difference in short term outcomes was observed between percutaneous and surgical approaches. A more prolonged follow-up study is required to assess longer-term outcomes.

“…Thus, the curative treatment modality recommended for most patients with HCC is resection or ablation [4]. However, the prognosis of HCC patients after curative treatment remains poor with a 5-year survival rate of 40% to 60% [5][6][7] and a 5-year recurrence rate in > 70% of cases [8,9]. As such, an adjuvant treatment that can reduce recurrence or improve survival of patients with HBV-related HCC after curative treatment should be developed.…”

“…With improvements in surgical techniques and perioperative management, the five-year survival rates for HCC after curative therapy have somewhat increased245. However, the rates of recurrence and intrahepatic or extrahepatic metastasis after surgery remain high678, thus limiting the prognosis for HCC patients910. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of HCC recurrence and metastasis is imperative.…”

“…This difference might have been a factor leading to differing tendencies in survival. RFA has been preferably performed for small HCCs in recent years [13,[23][24][25][26][27]. However, Rust and Gores [28] stressed that ablative therapy is still considered a palliative option in cases of HCC patients with poor liver function.…”
