Radiosurgery versus carbon dioxide laser for dermatochalasis correction in Asians

Abstract: Background and Objectives: Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) laser and radiosurgery are techniques commonly employed in oculoplastic surgery. However, there is no literature comparing their results in blepharoplasty. Study Design/Materials and Methods: Twenty Chinese patients with dermatochalasis underwent radiosurgery in one upper eyelid and CO 2 laser in the contralateral eyelid. Intraoperative time, hemorrhage, and pain control were assessed. Subjects were evaluated at postoperative 1 hour, 1 week, 1 month, and 3 mont… Show more

“…However, skin types from different racial background have differently healing and scar formation. 2 The aim of this study is to compare the eyelid sensation recovery, scar formation, and histopathologic aspects of RF versus scalpel incision for upper blepharoplasty in Mediterranean patients. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study comparing the sensation recovery of RF versus scalpel incision and is the first such a report on Mediterranean patients.…”

“…Bleeding with ecchymosis and hematoma are frequent complications of scalpel blepharoplasty. 2 Heat-producing devices for incision such as electrosurgery, lasers, ultrasonic scalpel, and high-frequency radiosurgery have been introduced to provide hemostasis and ease of incision. [1][2][3][4][5] Radiosurgery facilitates incisions in various fields of plastic surgery including blepharoplasty, face lifting, hair restoration surgery, and abdominoplasty.…”

“…Being highly sensitive to the effects of gravity, ultraviolet radiation, and facial animation, these areas of the face are also among the first to show signs of aging. [3][4][5][6][7] In addition, many modifications in surgical technique are used depending on the experience and preference of the surgeon. In a 2005 survey of cosmetic and plastic surgeons, blepharoplasty ranked as the third most commonly performed aesthetic surgical procedure in the United States.…”

“…Cosmetic blepharoplasty remains one of the most common and popular procedures for aesthetic and functional reasons. Multiple incisional modalities have been used over the years including scalpel, scissors, cautery, electrosurgery, radiowave surgery, and lasers and have been discussed and compared in the scientific literature 1–9 . Using cold steel or scissors produces aesthetic results but does not provide simultaneous hemostasis with incision.…”
