Radon concentration in drinking water and supplementary exposure in Baita-Stei mining area, Bihor county (Romania)

Abstract: The radon concentration was measured in the drinking water of public water supply and private wells located in the mining area of BăiŢa-Ştei, Bihor County, Romania. The measurements were performed using the LUK-VR system based on radon gas measurement with Lucas cell. The results show that the radon concentrations are within the range of 1.9-134.3 kBq m(-3) with an average value of 35.5 kBq m(-3) for well water, 18.5 kBq m(-3) for spring water and 6.9 kBq m(-3) for tap water. Comparing with previous data from … Show more

“…The average radon concentration obtained in the current study is compatible with the surrounding countries, such as Yemen, UAE, Kuwait, Iraq, and Jordan, as shown in Table 2. The results in the present study are far below those of Turkey [43], Algeria [44], India [45], Romania [46], Sudan [47], Iran [48], and China [49]. The geological nature of the sampling area, soil nature, and environment can impact the radon concentration [50].…”

“…While in the sedimentary type groundwater flows through pores and fractures, continuously. The highest concentration of radon in granite aquifer is measured [6,9]. The presence of 238 U, in granite and its decay produce 234 Th and 226 Ra 226 Ra is causing radon gas that is alpha particle emitter [22].Radon concentration is dependent on the position of the geochemical and geological phenomena such as the presence of faults and folded layers [23].…”
