Radon concentration in soil gas and radon exhalation rate at the Ravne Fault in NW Slovenia

Abstract: Abstract. The Ravne tectonic fault in north-west (NW) Slovenia is one of the faults in this region, responsible for the elevated seismic activity at the Italian-Slovene border. Five measurement profiles were fixed in the vicinity of the Ravne fault, four of them were perpendicular and one parallel to the fault. At 18 points along these profiles the following measurements have been carried out: radon activity concentration in soil gas, radon exhalation rate from ground, soil permeability and gamma dose rate. Th… Show more

“…The air trapped inside the chamber was circulated in a closed circuit for about 90 min, and the concentration of radon accumulated in the chamber was recorded every 10 min. The radon flux was determined from the slope of the straight line fitted to individual readings (Mazur, 2008;Vaupotič et al, 2010). A special device was constructed which enabled automatic movement of the exhalation chamber, down to the ground for radon flux measurement and up for ventilation of the system (Mazur, 2008 Fig.…”

“…First measurements of atmospheric 222 Rn were performed in the late 1920s (Wigand and Wenk, 1928). A recent summary by Zhang et al (2011) identifies 41 stations worldwide where 222 Rn was measured regularly for periods longer that 1 year (USA -8; Europe -19; Asia -12; South America, Australia, Africa -5; remote ocean and polar regions -7).…”
