RagRug: A Toolkit for Situated Analytics

Abstract: Fig. 1. Example application built with RagRug: (left) Hot air emissions in the basement. All measurements are taken in real-time by stationary sensors observing heat distribution. Multiple sensors are visually annotated with panels giving detailed sensor characteristics, including two types of time-series plots of temperature. (right) An application supporting the design of an exhibition of musical artefacts. Each of the two exhibition walls on the left and right hand side has been decorated with multiple exhi… Show more

“…This platform uses the HoloLens application as a client to a central server application and provides different training scenarios. We did not have the option of using a toolkit such as RagRug [11] or DXR [26], as our approach needed to not require significant changes to the existing architecture and code base and be flexible enough to seamlessly integrate into other scenarios. Furthermore, trainees need to interact in the real spaces, unobstructed by AR visualizations.…”

“…Two further problems arise when visualising embodied information in augmented space. First, most traditional authoring tools are focused on 2D visualisations, and new toolkits such as DXR [99] and RagRug [100] have only provided the basis to display 2D visualisations of data in 3D. Second, the benefit of the third dimension is difficult to grasp and even more difficult to implement.…”

“…Second, the benefit of the third dimension is difficult to grasp and even more difficult to implement. Most modern immersive analytics actually rely on embedding 2D displays into the real world [17,[99][100][101]. Visualisations in 3D are typically derived from the previous 2D media, but there is a trend towards exploring new possibilities.…”
