Raman Sensing and Its Multimodal Combination with Optoacoustics and OCT for Applications in the Life Sciences

Abstract: Currently, many optical modalities are being investigated, applied, and further developed for non-invasive analysis and sensing in the life sciences. To befit the complexity of the study objects and questions in this field, the combination of two or more modalities is attempted. We review our work on multimodal sensing concepts for applications ranging from non-invasive quantification of biomolecules in the living organism to supporting medical diagnosis showing the combined capabilities of Raman spectroscopy,… Show more

“…Over the last two decades, tremendous advances in both the resolution and speed of optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging, coupled with its non-invasive nature, have led to its widespread adoption [ 20 , 21 ]. Similarly, wide-field imaging modalities, including fundus autofluorescence, are being used increasingly to aid in the identification of lipofuscin [ 22 ].…”

“…New insights obtained from the simulations serve as valuable input for the design of novel instruments based on non-invasive, optical principles or facilitate the interpretation of measured data obtained from biological samples. The simulation methods presented in this review are mainly focused on biomedical optical imaging and spectroscopy [67]. However, they will likely influence further fields of application in the near future.…”

“…Multimodal CARS systems have been established, such as CARS/SHG/2PEF imaging [141][142][143], CARS/ SHG/2PEF/THG imaging [144] and OCT imaging of murine skin [142,145], to provide multi-source and complementary information and enhanced contrast of various cellular features.…”
