Randomised control trial of a proactive intervention supporting recovery in relation to stress and irregular work hours: effects on sleep, burn-out, fatigue and somatic symptoms

Abstract: ObjectivesTo examine if a proactive recovery intervention for newly graduated registered nurses (RNs) could prevent the development of sleep problems, burn-out, fatigue or somatic symptoms.MethodsThe study was a randomised control trial with parallel design. Newly graduated RNs with less than 12 months’ work experience were eligible to participate. 461 RNs from 8 hospitals in Sweden were invited, of which 207 signed up. “…However, Dahlgren et al (2022) did not find significant differences in subjectively assessed insomnia severity or sleep quality after nurses received three 2.5 h CBT‐based proactive recovery program sessions. Carter et al (2013) did not find significant changes in subjective sleep quality assessed by the PSQI after group CBT‐I education in nine hospice nurses.…”

“…Overall, 7 out of 22 RCTs were graded as low risk of bias (good quality) (Baradari et al, 2018; Chang et al, 2017; Cyr et al, 2023; Hsu et al, 2021; Mousavi et al, 2020; Niu et al, 2021; Zhang et al, 2020), and the rest were graded as high risk of bias. Dropout rates of the RCTs were moderate, with 10 RCTs reporting dropout rates of <10%, and 12 RCTs reporting dropout rates from 12.5% to 77% (Aarts et al, 2020; Bjorvatn et al, 2021; Booker et al, 2022; Carter et al, 2013; Dahlgren et al, 2022; Fang & Li, 2015; Hoshi et al, 2022; Lee et al, 2014; Morimoto et al, 2016; Omeogu et al, 2020; Scott et al, 2010b; Zhang et al, 2020). All others were quasi‐experimental studies and considered high risk of bias.…”

“…Third, a cognitive behavioral approach was implemented in seven studies involving healthcare workers ( n = 388) and other occupational workers ( n = 554) ( 12 , 25 , 32 , 34 , 38 , 40 , 44 ). The interventions included educational programs consisting of sleep physiology, sleep hygiene, and fatigue-relieving and sleep-promoting strategies ( n = 4) ( 12 , 32 , 40 , 44 ), cognitive behavioral interventions ( n = 2) ( 25 , 34 ), and exercise interventions ( 38 ). The interventions were delivered through face-to-face sessions ( 25 , 32 , 40 , 44 ) and mobile technology ( 12 , 34 ).…”
