Randomised equivalency trial comparing 2.5% povidone-iodine eye drops and ophthalmic chloramphenicol for preventing neonatal conjunctivitis in a trachoma endemic area in southern Mexico

Abstract: PIED seems to increase the risk of acquiring chlamydial conjunctivitis in neonates. Additional measures are required to prevent mother to fetus transmission of chlamydial infection during pregnancy, delivery, and after birth.

“…A study in Mexico compared the 2.5% povidone-iodine and the 1% chloramphenicol eye ointment in a Chlamydia-endemic area, but it did not evaluate their efficiency in reducing bacterial colonies in the conjunctiva. 9 For many years, the 1% chloramphenicol eye ointment has been used as a prophylactic agent against ON in many hospitals in Indonesia, including our hospital which is a national referral center in Indonesia. It is necessary to seek alternative prophylactic agents such as povidone-iodine eye solution.…”

“…A full description of the cohort has been already published [13]. In brief, a cohort study of 2184 newborns from three public hospitals in Chiapas was started in 2003 [14]. The initial assessment included sociodemographic data, anthropometric measurements of the newborn and gynecological history of the mother.…”

“…In Canada, erythromycin has been the only antibiotic eye ointment available for use in neonates since tetracycline ophthalmic ointment became unavailable. Povidone-iodine has been considered for prophylaxis, (12) but this agent may not be effective (13,14) and has been associated with a 5% rate of chemical conjunctivitis. (15) Gentamicin ointment was used for newborn ocular prophylaxis during a shortage of erythromycin ointment in the United States in 2009, but resulted in reports of severe ocular reactions.…”
