Randomized clinical trial analyzing maintenance of peripheral venous catheters in an internal medicine unit: Heparin vs. saline

Abstract: Background Peripheral venous catheters (PVCs) require adequate maintenance based on heparin or saline locks in order to prevent complications. Heparin has proven effective in central venous catheters, although its use in PVCs remains controversial. Our hypothesis was that saline locks are as effective as heparin locks in preventing problems with PVCs. The objective of the present study was to compare phlebitis and catheter tip colonization rates between PVCs locked with saline and those locked with heparin in … Show more

“…High incidence of phlebitis and infection of inserted PVCs has been found in emergency areas. In these cases, it is recommended to replace the catheter within the first 48 h if aseptic technique could not be ensured [7,41].…”

“…This is due to contamination of the catheter dressing caused by contact with oral discharge. Catheter-induced bacteremia is the most serious complication of venous catheter use [10]. Although the infection may be due to contamination of the injectable material, or colonization of the catheter hub, most infections are due to the secondary implantation of the patient's dermal flora microorganisms into the intradermal pathway of the catheter [6,9,11].…”

Have been shown a correlation between isolated organisms in bacteremia caused by catheter and the skin flora adjacent to catheter [10][11][12].…”
