Randomized Differential DSSS: Jamming-Resistant Wireless Broadcast Communication

Abstract: Abstract-Jamming resistance is crucial for applications where reliable wireless communication is required. Spread spectrum techniques such as Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) and Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) have been used as countermeasures against jamming attacks. Traditional antijamming techniques require that senders and receivers share a secret key in order to communicate with each other. However, such a requirement prevents these techniques from being effective for anti-jamming broadcas… Show more

“…The following simulation setting is adopted unless otherwise noted: the number of channels C = 64, O = 10bits, L = 300 bits, R = 1kbps, C j = 640/sec, and M = 5. Fig.1 shows the average network broadcast delay (in time slots) for different number of relays 4 . We can see that Collaborative UFH significantly outperforms UFH and appropriate selection of the number of relays further improves the network throughput.…”

“…A common strategy adopted by most works is to introduce randomness on the selection of spreading code sequences in DSSS or hopping channels in FH. Uncoordinated DSSS (UDSSS) [2], Uncoordinated FH (UFH) [3] and Randomized Differential DSSS (RD-DSSS) [4] belong to this category. In UDSSS (resp.…”

“…Intruders only need to connect to communication channels rather than authenticated networks in the smart grid, it is very easy for them to launch DoS attacks against the smart grid communication networks, especially for the wireless-based communication networks that are susceptible to jamming attacks [39]- [41]. Hence, it is of critical importance to evaluate the impact of DoS attacks on the smart grid and to design effective countermeasures to such attacks.…”

“…However, UDSSS is vulnerable to reactive jamming attacks. RD-DSSS [16] also proposes a similar technique that can be resistant to reactive jamming attacks. BBC [9] proposes a coding approach to encode data to be transmitted into "indelible" marks that can be decoded without any prior knowledge of keys.…”
