Rapid and Simple Determination of Phthalates in Plastic Toys by a Thermal Desorption-GC/MS Method

Abstract: A thermal desorption (TD)-GC/MS method was applied for the determination of phthalates in plastic children's toys. The method, which does not need any cumbersome sample pretreatment such as solvent extraction, filtration and derivatization, has been proved to be useful not only as a sensitive analytical method to evaluate phthalate concentration in the toys, but also as a rapid and practical screening method to check whether the concentration exceeds the regulatory limit.

“…The undoped urine sample showed peaks that corresponded to long-chain alkanes, fatty acids, and amides, all of which are commonly found in urine. 42 Notably, the urine sample also contained GC-MS peaks that corresponded to benzophenone, 43 commonly used in personal care products such as sunscreen 44 and lip balm, 45 phthalates, commonly found in plastics 46 and some food products, 47 and acetaminophen, commonly found in over-the-counter pain relievers. 48…”

“…Although the TD-GC/MS method has been suggested as the accurate quantification method for the analysis of semi-volatile compounds in polymeric materials, [13][14][15] it is difficult to obtain a calibration curve for a target compound with high volatility due to the loss of the target compound during sample preparation or waiting time before analysis.…”

“…For these reasons, direct thermal desorption (TD) of target compounds from polymeric matrices was suggested as a simple and safe tool for the analysis of hazardous chemicals in polymers. [13][14][15] For example, TD-GC/MS was nominated as the standard test method for the determination of low level, regulated phthalates in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics. 16 Simple and fast quantification of phthalates in polymer samples has become possible without using any extraction solvent by applying TD-GC/MS as a standard method.…”

“…For real-time monitoring (RTM), an evolved gas analysis capillary tube is used to by-pass the GC column, allowing the gases released to be monitored directly by the MS detector [20,21]. This study aims at modifying this system that has been applied to evaluate different processes [22][23][24][25][26][27] and adapt it as a FT setup that can generate meaningful data within the shortest possible time frame.…”
