Rare symptomatic bladder leiomyoma: case report and literature review

Abstract: Bladder leiomyoma is a rare, benign tumour of the bladder. We present a clinical case of a 47-year-old asymptomatic woman with symptomatic bladder leiomyoma. Computed tomography showed well-defined bladder leiomyoma in the right posterior bladder wall. After partial cystectomy, pathology findings confirmed leiomyoma of bladder, and the patient achieved clinical recovery in 8 months. We discuss the relevant recent literature of bladder leiomyoma.

“…Although older reports have reported an equal occurrence between genders and no apparent association with age (age at onset: 22-78 years) [6], recent data has pointed out that the actual incidence of bladder leiomyoma may be twice as high in women than in men [4]. Symptoms are related to site and size of the lesion, and include urinary symptoms (hesitancy, frequency, dribbling), lower abdominal pain or discomfort and pregnancy complications (prematurity); gross hematuria may also be present [6,7].…”

“…Fewer than 250 cases of bladder leiomyoma have been reported in the literature so far [4]. Despite being rare, these neoplasms are the most common benign mesenchymal tumours of the urinary bladder, accounting for around one third of these kind of neoplasms.…”

“…The incidence of bladder leiomyoma in women is twice as high as that in men. Furthermore, middle-aged patients of approximately 50 years old present the most considerable adverse symptoms among all age groups [5].…”

“…Imaging methods such as ultrasound, CT, and magnetic resonance imaging cannot differentiate mesenchymal tumors, and surgical removal of the mass is necessary for definite histopathological diagnosis [14]. The surgical methods that have been applied include laparoscopically assisted, robotically assisted, open, transurethral, and transvaginal excision [15] depending on the tumor location. In this case, the tumor was excluded by an open method since endovesical pathology had been excluded.…”
