The ethical and logistical challenges inherent in experimental infections of wild-caught animals present a key limitation to the study of wildlife diseases. Here we characterize a potentially useful domestic model for a wildlife disease that has been of particular interest in recent decades; that is, infection of North American house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) with Mycoplasma gallisepticum, more commonly known as a worldwide poultry pathogen. Seven domestic canaries (Serinus canaria domestica) were infected experimentally with M. gallisepticum alongside two wild-caught house finches (C. mexicanus) and the resulting clinical disease, pathogen load, serology and pathology were compared. Although rates of morbidity were higher in domestic canaries in response to M. gallisepticum infection, no significant differences were detected between the two species in the four measures of infection and disease studied. Our results support previous field and experimental studies that have documented universal susceptibility to M. gallisepticum infection in the avian family Fringillidae, which includes domestic canaries. Our results also indicate that domestic canaries may serve as a potentially useful model system for the experimental study of M. gallisepticum infection in songbirds.

Companion rats are often presented to veterinarians for respiratory difficulties. Dyspnea in rats is most commonly due to infectious pneumonia, and thoracic neoplasia can go undiagnosed ante mortem due to a mistaken interpretation of pneumonia. In domestic carnivores, pulmonary nodular patterns have been shown to correlate with lung neoplastic diseases and infectious diseases. The main objective of this retrospective case series study was to determine whether certain radiographic criteria could be correlated with the presence of thoracic infectious disease and neoplastic disease in companion rats. A secondary objective was to determine whether the patient's sex and age were different between rats diagnosed with infectious versus neoplastic disease. Medical records and thoracic radiographs of dyspneic companion rats presented to the University of California at Davis, William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital during the time period from January 2000 to December 2014 were reviewed. Rats with postmortem confirmation of thoracic lesions were included in the study. Thoracic radiographs were evaluated for positioning, lesion distribution, lung lobe involved, pulmonary pattern, mediastinal and pleural lesions by three observers blinded to diagnosis. Thirty rats were included in the study, including 23 rats with an infectious disease and seven with neoplasia. Mediastinal lesions were significantly more prevalent in the group diagnosed with thoracic neoplasia (P = 0.031), in particular cranially (P = 0.048). Although there was an overlap between the two groups, findings indicated that the presence of cranial mediastinal lesions may be helpful for differentiating neoplastic from infectious disease in rats.
The 2017 annual National Toxicology Program Satellite Symposium, entitled “Pathology Potpourri,” was held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, at the Society of Toxicologic Pathology's (STP) 36th annual meeting. The goal of this symposium was to present and discuss challenging diagnostic pathology and/or nomenclature issues. This article presents summaries of the speakers' talks, along with select images that were used by the audience for voting and discussion. Various lesions and other topics covered during the symposium included renal papillary degeneration in perinatally-exposed animals; an atriocaval mesothelioma; an unusual presentation of an alveolar bronchiolar carcinoma; a paraganglioma of the Organ of Zuckerkandl, also called an extra adrenal pheochromocytoma; the use of human muscle samples to illustrate the challenges of manual scoring of fluorescent staining; intertubular spermatocytic seminomas; medical device pathology assessment and discussion of the approval process; collagen induced arthritis; incisor denticles; ameloblast degeneration and poorly mineralized enamel matrix; connective tissue paragangliomas; microcystin LR toxicity; perivascular mast cells in the forebrain thalamus unrelated to treatment; and two cases that provided a review of the International Harmonization of Nomenclature and Diagnostic Criteria (INHAND) bone nomenclature and recommended application of the terminology in routine nonclinical toxicity studies.
