Vaginal and Rectal Administration

“…Much of the animal work reported in the literature consists of acute (up to 4-h) exposures using such methods as perianal pursestring sutures in anesthetized rats (Behrendt and Cserpes, 1985) or closure of the orifice with surgical adhesive to retain the administered dose (Okada et al, 1982). Other researchers have successfully administered materials to rats using cannulation (small diameter polyvinyl chloride tubing) and infusion pumps (Van Hoogdalem et al, 1988) or in rabbits using multiple actuations of a metered-dose spray (Corbo et al, 1989). The latter procedure appears to have the best potential for a repeat-dose study.…”
