Rattling in the Cage: Ions as Probes of Sub-picosecond Water Network Dynamics

Abstract: We present terahertz (THz) measurements of salt solutions that shed new light on the controversy over whether salts act as kosmotropes (structure makers) or chaotropes (structure breakers), which enhance or reduce the solvent order, respectively. We have carried out precise measurements of the concentration-dependent THz absorption coefficient of 15 solvated alkali halide salts around 85 cm(-1) (2.5 THz). In addition, we recorded overview spectra between 30 and 300 cm(-1) using a THz Fourier transform spectrom… Show more

“…52 A number of groups have investigated the temperature dependence of the dielectric relaxation processes in liquid water. [59][60][61][62][63] Using THz-TDS, it was possible to determine the size of the hydration shells around dissolved protons in water. 60 In combination with IR and molecular dynamics simulations, THz-TDS was used to study the structure of methanol-water mixtures 61 and acetonitrile-water mixtures.…”

“…44 The low frequency spectra of solvated ions were found to contain spectroscopic signatures of cation and anion hydration as well as information on the nature of ion pairs (solvent separated versus contact ion pairs). 43 Moreover, for the solvated zwitterion glycine, the idea of a "supermolecular solvation complex" was introduced, i.e., with the explicit inclusion of strongly bound interfacial water molecules in the vibrational analysis. 44 Finding an adequate description of the low frequency THz spectra of liquid water with classical force fields is still a hot topic.…”
