Rayleigh waves in nonlocal generalized thermoelastic media

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this article is to investigate the propagation characteristics (such as particle motion, attenuation and phase velocity) of a Rayleigh wave in a nonlocal generalized thermoelastic media. Design/methodology/approach The bulk waves are represented with Helmholtz potentials. The stress-free insulated and isothermal plane surfaces are taken into account. Rayleigh wave dispersion relation has been established and is found to be complex. Due to the presence of radicals, the dispersion equati… Show more

“…Each plot showcases a mesmerizing phenomenon: particles trace an elliptical path that spirals over time, encompassing both vertical and horizontal motion. This behavior aligns with the well-established property of Rayleigh waves to induce simultaneous horizontal and vertical vibrations [68,69]. Intriguingly, the spiraling elliptical motion remains consistent overall, but a closer look reveals subtle variations in the intensity of U 1 and U 3 .…”

“…The presented plots reveal captivating phenomena in which particles exhibit a spiral elliptical trajectory over time, including both horizontal and vertical motion, across all examined depth ( z ) values. The intriguing behavior seen may be due to the intricate characteristics of Rayleigh waves, which are well-known for their ability to induce simultaneous horizontal and vertical vibrations (Sharma, 2023; Kumar et al , 2023c). One notable observation is that, while the general spiral ellipse pattern stays consistent, there are subtle variations in the amplitude of horizontal and vertical particle motion.…”

“…A problem of reflection of waves at the free surface of a nonlocal thermoelastic half-space under the purview of Lord-Shulman model of generalized thermoelasticity was studied by Das et al (2022). Kumar et al (2023) investigated the propagation characteristics of a Rayleigh wave with isothermal and insulated boundaries of nonlocal generalized thermoelastic media. Chaudhary et al (2023) examined the characteristics of plane waves in a transversely isotropic nonlocal thermoelastic medium with variable thermal conductivity and viscosity.…”
