Software defined network and network function visualization enhance the network flexibility and management agility, which increase network fragility and complexity. However, the vast majority of network parameters are manually configured, which makes the configuration failures still inevitable. Future networks should be self-configuring, self-managing, and self-optimizing. Intent-driven network (IDN) is a self-driving network that uses decoupling network control logic and closed-loop orchestration techniques to automate application intents. At present, a unified definition of IDN has not yet been presented, and the research background and current status of IDN are not clear. Considering the emerging applications and research of IDN, in this article, we survey existing technologies, clarify definitions, and summarize features for IDN. Specifically, we discuss the basic architecture and key technologies of IDN. In addition, diversity gains and challenges are analyzed briefly. Finally, some future work is highlighted and wider applications of IDN are provided for further research.

This paper investigates the recent-advances in intent-based technologies while concentrating on aspects related to network management and orchestration. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the standardization activities as well as platforms related to intent-based networking. At the end of the paper, we also provide some insights into challenges related to future development process on the intent-based networking design. Our survey results indicate that intent-based networking concept has not evolved further since 2015 in terms of framework, platform and tool developments. However, recent rapid advances in Natural Language Understanding (NLU) propelled by IT and cloud giants (Google, Amazon, Facebook) are expected to increase its adaption into networking and telecommunication world in the forthcoming years.

Year after year, the growth of video traffic over the Internet keeps increasing. Video streaming over best-effort networks is considered inefficient and inappropriate to meet the expected Quality of Experience (QoE) of the new generation of multimedia services. Over the past few years, a number of technologies have emerged to improve the state of the art of video delivery, including HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) that adapts the bitrate according to network conditions. At the crossroads, Software Defined Networking (SDN) offers options to meet Quality of Service (QoS) objectives for improved video quality by exploiting end-to-end programmability of network behaviour. However, traditional SDN approaches require dealing with low-level details from the underlying infrastructure, interfering in the automation and agility of service deployments. To alleviate these issues and overall provide a simpler approach, Intent-Based Networking (IBN) is being proposed to abstract low-level configurations through high-level policy interfaces. In this paper, we explore such an approach by implementing intent-based control loops for video service assurance. The proposed methods dynamically reconfigure the network for service-specific requirements using IBN to define the high-level behavior. We experimentally evaluate a use case where video traffic is rerouted based on network conditions to improve the QoS. The Proof-of-Concept results point to the potential of improving video content delivery through QoS-aware Intent-based approaches.
