Reactive Distillation toward an Ecoefficient Process of Continuous Biodiesel Manufacture from Waste Oil: Pilot-Scale Experiments and Process Design

Abstract: The objective of the present work is to find a potential way for a great decrease in the biodiesel production energy requirement and CO 2 emission from the aspects of the reactor and process. Here, for the first time, a series of pilot-scale reactive distillation (RD) experiments were conducted using the cation-exchange resin catalysts and used for biodiesel synthesis from esterification of soybean oil deodorized distillate with methanol. The reaction kinetics was also investigated at different temperatures an… Show more

“…However, the raw material needed for this reaction must have reduced levels of acidity and moisture to avoid saponification reactions [26]. Due to the high costs of obtaining feedstocks that meet these specifications and competition with the food industry, studies aimed at the production of biodiesel from residual oils with a high content of fatty acids have been published [27][28][29][30].…”

“…RD can break the limitation of chemical equilibrium, thus enhancing the conversion of reactants . Moreover, RD can significantly reduce process and mechanical operation cost, , and hence, it has been widely applied in many fields of chemical engineering. , However, using ILs to catalyze the esterification in the RD process has been rarely reported. Due to the expensive nature of ILs, the economic analysis for IL application in an RD process is necessary.…”

“…By coupling reaction and separation, it can increase the reaction conversion rate and reduce the production cost and has been widely used in the chemical industry. At present, the research and application system of reactive distillation has been very extensive, including esterification reaction, hydrolysis reaction, etherification reaction, , and ketal reaction . Clarkson et al proposed a reactive distillation method to synthesize solketal.…”
