in Wiley Online Library (wileyonlinelibrary.com).The synthesis and design of reactive distillation columns separating reacting mixtures with the most unfavorable relative volatilities (i.e., the reactants are the heaviest and lightest components with the products being the intermediate ones) are described. The unfavorable thermodynamics poses great difficulties in combining the reaction operation and the separation operation involved and limits severely the potential of reactive distillation columns in the reduction of capital investment (CI) and operating cost. To remove the limitation, we propose two strategies for facilitating the synthesis and design of this kind of reactive distillation columns in this article. One is to arrange prudentially the reactive section so as to strengthen internal energy integration between the reaction operation and the separation operation involved; that is, while the reactive section should be placed at the bottom of the reactive distillation columns separating exothermic reactions, it should be at the top of the reactive distillation columns separating endothermic reactions. The other is to introduce an external recycle flow between the two ends of the reactive distillation columns to reinforce internal mass integration and internal energy integration between the reaction operation and the separation operation involved; that is, whereas the external recycle flow should be directed from the top to bottom of the reactive distillation columns separating exothermic reactions, it should be from the bottom to top of the reactive distillation columns separating endothermic reactions. Separation of four hypothetical ideal (i.e., two quaternary and two ternary systems, respectively) and two real nonideal (i.e., two quaternary systems) reacting mixtures is chosen to evaluate the proposed strategies. The results show that they can considerably lower energy requirement besides a further reduction in CI. Biodiesel is a biodegradable and renewable fuel, emerging as a viable alternative to petroleum diesel. Conventional biodiesel processes still suffer from problems associated with the use of homogeneous catalysts and the limitations imposed by the chemical reaction equilibrium, thus leading to severe economic and environmental penalties. This work provides a detailed review—illustrated with relevant examples—of novel reactive separation technologies used in biodiesel production: reactive distillation/absorption/extraction, and membrane reactors. Reactive separation offers new and exciting opportunities for manufacturing the fatty acid alkyl esters involved in the industrial production of biodiesel and specialty chemicals. The integration of reaction and separation into one operating unit overcomes equilibrium limitations and provides major benefits such as low capital investment and operating costs. These reactive separation processes can be further enhanced by heat‐integration and powered by heterogeneous catalysts, to eliminate all conventional catalyst related operations, using efficiently the raw materials and the reaction volume, while offering higher conversion and selectivity, as well as significant energy savings compared with conventional biodiesel processes. Remarkable, in spite of the high degree of integration, such integrated reactive‐separation processes are still very well controllable as illustrated by the included examples. Process Intensification Technologies for Biodiesel Production

Reactive distillation (RD) processes integrate reaction and distillation, the reactants being converted with the simultaneous separation of the products. This chapter describes the use of reactive distillation technology to produce biodiesel by esterification of free fatty acids, or trans-esterification of various oils (triglycerides). An overview of the reported experimental and simulation studies is provided, covering also the process design, dynamics and control, as well as more complex RD configurations based on dividing-wall column technology.Reactive distillation (RD) is especially attractive in systems where certain chemical and phase equilibrium conditions co-exist. The reaction and distillation take place in the same zone of a distillation column, the reactants being converted with the simultaneous separation of the products and recycle of unused reactants. As the products must be separated from reactants by distillation, this implies that the products should be lighter and/or heavier than the reactants. The ideal case is when one product is the lightest and the other product is the heaviest, with the reactants being the intermediate boiling components (Luyben and Yu 2008).
