Reactive Oxygen Species and Antioxidants in the Pathophysiology of Cardiovascular Disease: Does the Actual Knowledge Justify a Clinical Approach?

Abstract: There is evidence that reactive oxygen species (ROS) are related to the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Results from many studies support the hypothesis that ROS released from various sources or dysfunctional mitochondrial respiratory chain play a role in the development of atherosclerosis and its complications. This phenomenon is due to ROS-mediated signalling pathways that are involved in the modulation of several vascular mechanisms. Various animal models have demonstrated that ROS have a causa… Show more

“…193 In vitro work suggests that plaque rupture and thrombosis, both late events in atherosclerosis, are mediated by oxidative stress. 194 Increased oxidative stress underlies the pathophysiology of hypertension and atherosclerosis by directly affecting vascular wall cells. The sum of this in vitro work supports the idea that oxidative stress is involved in multiple processes relevant to CVD.…”

“…Na stanje intracelularne oksidativne ravnoteže utiču složeni procesi endogenog i egzogenog oksidativnog stresa i antioksidativnih mehanizama odbrane (30). Ukoliko dođe do oksidativnog disbalansa i povećanja produkcije slobodnih radikala, mogu se javiti oksidativna oštećenja biomolekula u ćelijama i pojave patoloških promena.…”
