Phenyl, naphthyl, polyarylphenyl, coronene, and other aromatic and polyaromatic moieties primarily influence the final materials’ properties. One of the synthetic tools used to implement (hetero)aromatic moieties into final structures is Diels–Alder cycloaddition (DAC), typically combined with Scholl dehydrocondensation. Substituted 2-pyranones, 1,1-dioxothiophenes, and, especially, 1,3-cyclopentadienones are valuable substrates for [4 + 2] cycloaddition, leading to multisubstituted derivatives of benzene, naphthalene, and other aromatics. Cycloadditions of dienes can be carried out with extrusion of carbon dioxide, carbon oxide, or sulphur dioxide. When pyranones, dioxothiophenes, or cyclopentadienones and DA cycloaddition are aided with acetylenes including masked ones, conjugated or isolated diynes, or polyynes and arynes, aromatic systems are obtained. This review covers the development and the current state of knowledge regarding thermal DA cycloaddition of dienes mentioned above and dienophiles leading to (hetero)aromatics via CO, CO2, or SO2 extrusion. Particular attention was paid to the role that introduced aromatic moieties play in designing molecular structures with expected properties. Undoubtedly, the DAC variants described in this review, combined with other modern synthetic tools, constitute a convenient and efficient way of obtaining functionalized nanomaterials, continually showing the potential to impact materials sciences and new technologies in the nearest future.

1.1 -Diaryl-substituierte Propinole 2 setzen sich rnit Cyclopentadienonen 1, 5 zu Triarylcarbinolen 3 , 6 um. Diese reagieren rnit Saurehalogeniden unter RingschluR zu arylsubstituierten Fluorenen 4 bzw. 9H-lndeno[l.2-j]fluoranthenen 7, die zum Teil Spirostruktur besitzen. Aus cc-methoxycarbonyl-substituierten Cyclopentadienonen 13, 14 und Propinolen 2 entstehen die substituierten I-Oxo-1.3-dihydro-fluorantheno[7.8-c]furane 15 bzw. 16. Vom asymrn. substituierten Cyclopentadienon 14 erhalt man zwei verschiedene Diels-Alder-Addukte 16a und 17 im Verhiiltnis 10 : I . Das Lacton 16a Iiii8t sich rnit einer Aryl-lithium-Verbindung zum Hydroxyprodukt 21 a, nicht jedoch zu 21 b umsetzen. Auch I-Methoxy-1.1-diarylpropine-(2) (19) reagieren rnit Cyclopentadienonen. Die NMR-Spektren einiger Verbindungen werden diskutiert. Wahrend Diels-Alder-Reaktionen von alkyl-und arylsubstituierten Acetylenen, Acetylenketonen und Acetylen-carbonsauren bzw. -carbonsaureestern niit Cyclopentadienonen seit langem bekannt sind3.4) und unsubstituiertes.6) sowie 1-alkyl-substituierte und 1 .I -dialkylsubstituierte Alkin-(2)-ole-(I)2~7) und Alkin-(2)-diole-(1.4)2,*) ebenfalls schon mit ,,Cycionen" zu den entsprechenden a-hydroxyalkyl-substituierten aromatischen Verbindungen umgesetzt wurden, sind Diels-Alder-Reaktionen von 1.1 -Diaryl-alkin-(2)-olen-(l) und 1 -Methoxy-l . Idiaryl-alkinen-(2) rnit Cyclopentadienonen bisher nicht beschrieben worden.Die Umsetzung der in den beiden cc-Stellungen zur Carbonylgruppe phenylsubstituierten Cyclopentadienone 1 (,,Tetracyclon") und 5 (,,Acecyclon") mit den l.l-Diaryl-propin-(2)-olen-(l) 2ad als Losungsmittel fuhrt unter Abspaltung von CO zu den substituierten Triarylcarbinolen 3a-d bzw. 6a, b. Diese werden trotz der grofien Raumerfiillung der Hydroxy-diaryl-methyl-Gruppe durchweg in guten Ausbeuten erhalten, wenn man als Reaktionstemp. etwa 200" einhalt. Bei niedrigerer Temperatur tritt offenbar die Diels-Alder-Reaktion langsamer als die Zersetzung der Diarylpropinole ein, wahrend bei hoherer Temperatur auch die Zersetzung der Cyclo-1) Teil der Dissertat. Eingegangen a m 25. Oktober 1968 Cyclopentadienone reagieren mit Alkinolen sowie rnit Alkindiolen zu 1-Hydroxy-alkyl-bzw. 0-Bis-[ I-hydroxy-alkyll-Derivaten des Benzols. Reactions with Cyclopentadienones, X V I ). I -Hydroxyalkyl Substituted Aromats from Cyclones. Alkinoles, and AlkindiolesCyclopentadienones react with alkinoles to yield ( I -hydroxyalkyl) derivatives of benzene. In an analogous reaction alkindioles form o-bis( I-hydroxyalkyl) compounds.
