Reading text with and without diacritics alters brain activation: The case of Arabic

Abstract: Diacritics in Arabic are optional orthographic symbols used to alter the pronunciation of a letter or distinguish between words of similar spellings, which may add or subtract complexity by imposing additional loads on the individual's information-processing system. In this study, we explored how reading Arabic text with and without diacritical signs (known as ḥarakāt) can influence readers' brain activation. An electroencephalogram (EEG) recording of 18 subjects was used in this study to assess the differences… Show more

“…Personality traits are already considered significant in affecting outcomes of social and economic interactions between humans (Cobb-Clark and Schurer, 2012;Rustichini et al, 2016;Proto et al, 2019;Sofianos, 2022). Given our findings, the personality traits of users could be taken into account in developing more effective interactions between humans and computers (Alves et al, 2020): for example, researchers are considering how elements of a user interface can be influenced by personality traits (Al-Samarraie et al, 2018), with the aim of designing more personalised systems that lead to more effective engagement from users. The findings from our study could be used to inspire AI interaction design that activates, or caters to, user traits of Honesty-Humility and Agreeableness which may in turn promote reciprocity.…”

“…The authors suggest their data support the hypothesis that Arabic text is more visually complex than other writing systems ( Carreiras et al, 2013 ; Yassin et al, 2020 ), which impacts reading fluency. To date, a few studies have investigated the VWFA’s response to Arabic print, primarily using EEG ( Al-Samarraie et al, 2020 ; Simon et al, 2006 ; Taha et al, 2013 ; Taha & Khateb, 2013 ). These prior studies consistently report an N170 response to Arabic print.…”

“…This is where the role of culture can at most be a modest one in a complex web of interacting factors in the design of mHealth apps (Alsswey et al, 2018a). In addition, modern technology is currently designed to satisfy its users' demands and preferences (Al-Samarraie et al, 2019a). Nisbett and Masuda (2003) agreed that members of a certain cultural group share similar ways of observing and processing information.…”
