Real-time 3D transesophageal echocardiography

Abstract: Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is established as an essential diagnostic tool for patients that are obese or that exhibit signs of pulmonary disease. However, current techniques in transesophageal scanning of the heart are limited by the maneuverability of the esophageal probe as well as by incomplete visualization in close proximity to the transducer. A real-time 3D TEE probe has been fabricated in our laboratory in order to improve on the shortcomings of current TEE devices and increase the amount of… Show more

“…Fig. 7 shows the comparison of the experimental spectral Doppler data (dotted line) and the calculated FFT model data (solid line) using the transverse displacement data from (16) for the distributed force case. The y-axis shows the normalized frequency spectrum maximum value, and the x-axis is the needle length, with the free end at the right.…”

“…intracardiac catheters have been the catalyst for the recent fabrication of endoscopic [15] and laparoscopic [16] 3-D probes we have used for cardiac applications. These have been constructed with 504 active channels at operating frequencies ranging from 5 to 7 MHz.…”

“…The pattern is shown in figure 4A, and the resulting Field II 17 For the 7 MHz laparoscope, we adapted a design we have previously used for a side viewing transesophageal endoscope. 18 This transducer was designed for 504 active channels to fit into a typical endoscope. The aperture size is limited to 6.5 mm to fit into the ID of the endoscope.…”
