High penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources (RES) and unexpected disruptions (e.g., natural disasters) are fundamental challenges which can threaten the secure operation of microgrids, especially during the islanded condition, with no support from the upstream grid. This paper introduces a hierarchical tri-layer min-max-min joint risk-and securityconstrained model predictive control (RSC-MPC) framework for real-time energy scheduling of islanded microgrids (IMGs) under the influence of uncertainty and real-time time-varying contingency conditions. While the first layer processes a prescheduling day-ahead optimisation, the second layer detects the worst-case contingency conditions by maximising the load curtailment and the mismatch between pre-scheduling (i.e., first layer) and real-time operation. The third layer implements the corrective security measures to minimise the negative effect of contingency conditions while accounting to the cost associated with the risk of uncertainty in the forecasted inputs. The third layer also explores the economic effects of the RES' uncertainty on the proposed RSC-MPC, considering the risk and energy procurement cost as conflicting objectives. The computational efficiency of the proposed hierarchical control system in terms of accuracy and processing time is guaranteed through a mixed integer conic programming model. Building energy flexibility (BEF) is getting increasing attention as a key factor for building energy saving target besides building energy intensity and energy efficiency. BEF is very rich in content but rare in solid progress. The battery energy storage system (BESS) is making substantial contributions in BEF. This review study presents a comprehensive analysis on the BEF with BESS, in terms of the current study statues, connection to building energy management, integration with renewable energy sources and electric vehicles. In addition, electric vehicle (EV) is found to be flexible by itself for BEF. This study delivers some new insights and findings that the synchronized aging of building and battery and complex optimization with multiple indexes, is still challenging. Additionally, the opportunities behind the challenges are also highlighted that the higher level of BEF can be achieved by tackling the higher level of system complexity. Further, the suggestions about distributed energy control for distributed energy system, as well as coupling building energy pattern with users’ behavior pattern, are also proposed. The review study may further facilitate the BEF with BESS and push forward the synergistic improvement of building energy efficiency, intensity, and flexibility.

Active Building as an Energy System: Concept, Challenges, and Outlook

Over the last decades, environmental concerns and the global tendency to reduce the use of fossil fuels and replacing them with renewable energy sources (RESs) to face the increasing rate of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have increased. Buildings consume a significant amount of energy and therefore, they are responsible for a noticeable part of the total GHG emission. Thus, when we talk about decarbonization of the energy systems, buildings are an important sector of the energy system that needs to be considered. Using RESs, smart technologies, and information and communication technologies along with the improvement in energy efficiency, are a number of endeavors to increase the role of building on the way toward decarbonization. In the new environment, the buildings are not passive players of the energy systems and they are able to take an active role and participate in the energy-efficient operation. While they are able to manage their resources and serve the local energy requirements of the residents in the best possible manner, they can participate in the energy and balancing markets and support the network operators as a service provider. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of active buildings' concept, challenges and outlook to pave the way for the researchers from academia and industry who want to start working in this area.
