Real-Time Landslide Warning During Heavy Rainfall

Abstract: A real-time system for issuing warnings of landslides during major storms is being developed for the San Francisco Bay region, California. The system is based on empirical and theoretical relations between rainfall and landslide initiation, geologic determination of areas susceptible to landslides, real-time monitoring of a regional network of telemetering rain gages, and National Weather Service precipitation forecasts. This system was used to issue warnings during the storms of 12 to 21 February 1986, which … Show more

“…Several studies have also found that peak rainfall intensity and the initiation of mass movements are often concurrent (Aleotti 2004;Chien-Yuan et al 2005;Guzzetti et al 2007Guzzetti et al , 2008Dahal and Hasegawa 2008;Saito et al 2010aSaito et al , 2010b. Although antecedent rainfall also plays an important role in the initiation of mass movement (Kim et al 1992;Glade 1997;Crozier 1999;Glade et al 2000;Guzzetti et al 2007Guzzetti et al , 2008Dahal and Hasegawa 2008), intensity-duration (I-D) thresholds and/or the peak rainfall intensity are often used to predict mass movements and warn the appropriate authorities of potential mass movement hazards (Onodera et al 1974;Keefer et al 1987;Aleotti 2004;Hong et al 2005;Cannon et al 2008;Coe et al 2008;Dahal and Hasegawa 2008;Guzzetti et al 2008).…”

“…To study storm event-induced landslides on a regional scale, a deterministic physical-based method is commonly used which requires the employment of an infinite-slope model and a hydrological model (Okimura and Ichikawa, 1985;Dietrich et al, 1986Dietrich et al, , 1995Keefer et al, 1987; Correspondence to: C.-T. Lee (ct@ncu.edu.tw) and Dietrich, 1994;Wu and Sidle, 1995;Montgomery et al, 1998;Terlien, 1998;Crozer, 1999;Polemic and Sdao, 1999;Iverson, 2000;Borga et al, 2002;Wilkinson et al, 2002;Crosta and Frattini, 2003;Malet et al, 2005;Baum et al, 2005;Salciarini et al, 2006;Claessens et al, 2007aClaessens et al, , 2007bSchmidt et al, 2008). This approach requires the strength parameters, failure depth and soil conductibility for every point in the limit-equilibrium slope stability calculation, a requirement which can cause serious problems in terms of acquisition and control of spatial variability of the variables (Hutchinson, 1995;Guzzetti et al, 1999).…”

“…2) The sediment deposit pond constructed in regulatory works Phase II is silted up now; the capacity of this area is about 4600 m 3 . In addition, the slit sabo dam in the upstream area has the ability of sediment material accumulated, which can intercept and reduce the sediment material flow to downstream area.…”
