This book presents an overview of the guidelines and strategies for transitioning an image or video processing algorithm from a research environment into a real-time constrained environment. Such guidelines and strategies are scattered in the literature of various disciplines including image processing, computer engineering, and software engineering, and thus have not previously appeared in one place. By bringing these strategies into one place, the book is intended to serve the greater community of researchers, practicing engineers, industrial professionals, who are interested in taking an image or video processing algorithm from a research environment to an actual real-time implementation on a resource constrained hardware platform. These strategies consist of algorithm simplifications, hardware architectures, and software methods. Throughout the book, carefully selected representative examples from the literature are presented to illustrate the discussed concepts. After reading the book, the readers are exposed to a wide variety of techniques and tools, which they can then employ for designing a real-time image or video processing system of interest. Note that the term order xlters [15] concerns a generalization of rank order "lters whereby the sorted array of signal values is mapped by a real-valued not-necessarily linear function. When the function is linear, order "lters correspond to thȩ -"lters proposed earlier [16]. AbstractRank order morphological operators have been designed to better cope with shape variations and noise than the corresponding operators with plain structuring elements. In this paper, starting from a brief historical overview of rank order "lters and erosions/dilations in digital image processing, rank order based morphological operators are surveyed. We also highlight the relations between these operators and show that many are similar if not equivalent. An extensive bibliography is provided.

Paper watermarks were invented in the 13th century in Italy for the identification of the workers, the concept continued to evolve in the digital era, to provide authentication and protection for the digital media. In this project, we are interested in digitising and extracting the graphical design of the watermark in order to create a digital version of it using various image processing operations. The digital representation can be embedded into the digital image of the content (the document) to continue its original purpose to protect the content. This project differs from other methods of watermark extraction because it uses back-lighting techniques rather than typical radioactive materials. Hence, it is safer and easier to use. Also, the developed system deals with papers with foreground interference and paper defects, while other methods deal with plain papers without any foreground interference. The software prototype consists of a set of image processing operations which enhance, filter, and extract the watermark shape, and to automatically convert it into a graphical object that can be represented in a vector format. The main purpose of this system is to enable a further level of document imaging for preservation, so that it will be accessible in a digital version. It will also allow the collection of a graphical watermark database which will provide the necessary data for authentication and copyright protection of digital media, and other domain specific studies of the watermark.
